For
those of you new to Targetware and the Richthofen's Skies mod the
following guide will help you get started flying.
If
you have no targetware software installed please go to www.targetware.net
and download the latest game engine (choose Windows or Mac version).
You need to create and account (also from Targetware main page)
and you need to enter your username and the password you receive
after you create your account into the settings tab that you'll
see after you run targetware.exe. At this point your next step is
to click on the download mods button and select the mod that you
want to fly. Choose one or get them all. After installing the mod
then select "Fly Online" You can of course practice offline,
set up your stick and controls, video etc. etc. It is recommended
that you look in to detuning your rudder if you find it difficult
to go straight down the runway on your takeoff roll. You can acheive
this by increasing you scaling of the rudder axis in joystick setup.
A little trial and error and you should have a steerable craft while
on takeoff.
When you join the online server or start offline you will need to
select a team, a aircraft and aircraft options. Look for the menus
to the upper left.
Set
your chocks (optional) by tapping the spacebar. When engine rpm's
max out tap the spacebar one time only. Do not use spacebar as a
brake. You will nose over.
Hit
the E key (or your mapped button) to start your engine. Some of
our current planes have blip throttles. This means they are 'on'
or 'off'. Advance your throttle if your rpm's seem low. Remember
to cut your throttle when diving when you are flying the early war
aircraft.
On
your takeoff roll hold the plane straight down the grass field.
Let the tail lift off on it's own without your stick movement. When
the tail rises your wings will soon begin to lift. Hold them level
and you are airborne. The late war aircraft have more power and
can require more finesse to get airborne. Right aileron is helpful
on the DR1's takeoff roll.
We
are implementing instruments in as many of our aircraft as we can.
If the plane you have selected does not have a instrument panel
you can hit Shift - F3 and you will see the debug data. The top
line has TAS IAS (true/indicated airspeed) Altitude listed in MSL
and AGL (sea level and above ground level) and climbrate. You should
take notice that the climbrate is highest when the speed is high.
Pointing your nose up is not the way to get altitude. A low angle
of attack and optimum speed is the best way to go.
The
FB5 the Albatross BII and the BE2C aircraft all have otto gunners
at the moments. The Albatros has a mauser rifle and the FB5 has
two machine gun options. Hit the 'F' key to toggle the gunner to
hold his fire. When your enemy is very close in range hit "F"
and light him up. The Bleriot XI trainers are available on both
sides. The central powers forces captured a number of them and affixed
CP markings. They are armed with pistols.
The BE2C has a pilot gun as well. It mounts beside the pilot and
shoots out about 1:00 and slightly up. Get someone to target drone
for you and sight it in. Be sure to get real close!
For
the early planes diving with engine on will over rev the engine
and cook it. Always reduce or cut the throttle on a steep dive or
manuever. The later war aircraft are a little more able to withstand
high RPM's. They can still be damaged though.
Use
the T key to chat online. If you need a little help just ask! Sometime
getting your stick set up properly can make a world of difference
in flying this sim.
Your map will toggle with the F4 key.
Patience and firing from close range is the key to victory. Your
ammo is limited. Use it wisely. Read the players guides and mission
breifings for more information.
Good
luck and most importantly have fun.
